How the two materials actually differ

Concrete tanks are steel-reinforced, poured either on-site or precast at a plant, and they rely on sheer mass to hold their shape underground for decades. Plastic tanks — almost always high-density polyethylene — are rotomolded as a single piece, so there are no seams to fail, and they weigh a fraction of what a concrete tank weighs.

That weight difference is the whole story behind almost every other tradeoff on this page. A plastic tank is light enough that a small crew can walk it into place by hand; nobody’s doing that with eight tons of precast concrete, and nobody’s volunteering to try. Fiberglass tanks exist too and split the difference — lighter than concrete, more rigid than plastic — but they’re a smaller share of what actually gets installed in residential septic systems today.

Seams are the other real difference. A rotomolded plastic tank comes out of the mold as one continuous piece, so there’s nothing to seal. A precast concrete tank is built from separate sections — typically a base and a lid, sometimes more on a larger tank — and every joint between them is a seam that has to be sealed watertight during installation and can, in theory, fail later if it wasn’t sealed correctly the first time.

Lifespan and durability

Concrete wins on raw lifespan — a properly installed precast tank commonly lasts 50 years, and it handles soil movement, ground pressure, and heavy equipment driving nearby better than plastic does, simply because it’s heavier and more rigid. Plastic tanks run 30 to 40 years and are actually less prone to cracking, since a single rotomolded piece flexes instead of fracturing the way concrete can when it’s stressed unevenly.

The tradeoff shows up in the ground, not on paper. Plastic tanks can float out of position in high groundwater or saturated soil if they’re not properly anchored, since an empty or partially empty tank weighs less than the water trying to displace it. Concrete tanks essentially never have this problem — their mass keeps them anchored on its own.

If your property sits in a high water table area, ask directly whether a plastic tank needs anchoring, and get it in writing. This is a real, well-documented failure mode, not a sales tactic.

Concrete has its own failure mode, and it’s chemical, not physical. Bacteria breaking down waste inside the tank produce hydrogen sulfide gas, which reacts with moisture in the air space above the liquid line to form sulfuric acid. Over years, that acid slowly eats into the concrete on the walls and underside of the lid — not the tank’s whole structure, just the part exposed to the gas — and in poorly ventilated or heavily loaded systems, it can soften the lid enough to become a real structural concern. Plastic doesn’t corrode this way at all; it simply doesn’t react with the acid.

This isn’t a reason to avoid concrete — it’s a normal, slow process in a well-maintained system, and it’s exactly what a routine inspection is supposed to catch before it becomes a problem. It’s just the honest answer to why a 50-year lifespan estimate assumes normal conditions, not a guarantee. Good ventilation and a properly working effluent filter both slow the buildup of hydrogen sulfide gas in the first place, which is one more reason a tank that never gets inspected tends to age faster than one that does.

Cost and installation

That gap is the single biggest reason plastic has become the default on new septic system installations where either material is allowed.

Site access matters more than people expect here. A lot with a tight driveway or no clear path for heavy equipment can turn a concrete install into a genuinely difficult job — sometimes difficult enough that plastic stops being a preference and becomes the only practical option.

Lead time follows the same pattern. A precast concrete tank comes from a local plant and has to be scheduled, sometimes days out, around that plant’s production and delivery capacity. Plastic tanks are lighter to stock and ship, so a supplier is more likely to have the size you need on hand — one more reason plastic tends to move faster on jobs where the timeline is tight.

Backfilling is where plastic needs more care, not less. A concrete tank can generally handle native soil backfilled around it without much thought. A plastic tank is more likely to deform under improper backfill — soil dumped in unevenly, or compacted before the tank has settled — so installers typically backfill it in stages with select fill, checking that the tank stays level as the material goes in. Skipping that step is one of the more common reasons a plastic tank underperforms its rated lifespan.

Repairing vs. replacing each type

What happens when something actually goes wrong tends to differ by material, too. A concrete tank with a hairline crack, a leaking joint, or early-stage lid corrosion can often be repaired in place — patched, resealed, or coated by a technician without pulling the tank out of the ground. That’s a big part of why concrete has a reputation for longevity: a lot of what would be a failure in another material is just a maintenance line item for concrete.

Plastic tanks are less forgiving of damage. A crack or puncture in a rotomolded shell isn’t something a technician patches on-site the way a concrete crack gets sealed — in most cases, a damaged plastic tank gets replaced rather than repaired, since there’s no standard field method for restoring the integrity of the molded plastic itself. That’s rarely an issue in practice, since plastic tanks are also less prone to cracking in the first place, but it’s worth knowing before you assume every tank problem has a cheap fix.

What Texas actually allows

Texas doesn’t force a single material on you. Under 30 TAC §285.32, approved septic tank materials are steel-reinforced poured-in- place concrete, steel-reinforced precast concrete, fiberglass, and reinforced plastic polyethylene. Metal tanks are explicitly prohibited, which rules out an option some older systems still have.

  • Precast concrete must meet ASTM C1227, verified in writing by a professional engineer and submitted by the manufacturer.
  • Fiberglass and plastic polyethylene tanks just have to be fabricated to actually perform the job — a lower documentation bar, but not a lower quality bar in practice.

In practice, that engineer-verification requirement for precast concrete is paperwork the manufacturer handles, not something a homeowner arranges — the tank shows up with documentation proving it meets the standard, and your installer submits it as part of the permit package. Plastic and fiberglass tanks clear a lower documentation bar under the rule, but that’s a difference in paperwork, not in what actually gets inspected before the system is approved.

Some counties layer their own requirements on top of the state minimum, so what’s technically legal in Texas isn’t always what’s permitted on your specific lot. That’s a question for your county’s permitting office before it’s a question for us.

Which one is actually right for you

If your county allows either and your soil doesn’t have a high water table, plastic is the simpler, cheaper choice for most homeowners — lower material cost, lower labor cost, and a 30-to-40-year lifespan that outlasts most people’s time in a house. Concrete earns its premium specifically where floating risk, difficult soil, or heavy surface loads over the tank are a real concern, or where your county simply requires it.

Where you actually live matters more here than most people assume. Whichever you pick, the material doesn’t change how the tank gets maintained. It still needs pumping every 3 to 5 years, and it still benefits from a septic tank riser so that maintenance doesn’t mean digging every single visit — that part is identical whether the tank underneath is concrete or plastic. Most people wait too long to pump because nothing looks wrong yet, and that habit costs a lot more over 30 years than which material sits in the ground.
