An aerobic septic system uses an electric aerator to pump oxygen into the wastewater, which lets bacteria break it down faster and cleaner than a conventional tank can on its own. That cleaner effluent is what makes aerobic systems legal on lots where a conventional system isn’t — small lots, poor soil, or high groundwater. The tradeoff is real money: aerobic systems cost more to install and add an annual maintenance contract a conventional system doesn’t need.

How a conventional system works

A conventional system is a tank plus a gravel drain field, and that’s essentially it. Solids settle out in the tank, naturally occurring anaerobic bacteria — the kind that work without oxygen — slowly break down what’s left, and the liquid that flows out gets finished off by the soil in the drain field. How an aerobic system works

An aerobic system adds a step conventional systems skip entirely. After the tank, wastewater moves into a treatment chamber where an aerator injects oxygen, feeding aerobic bacteria that break down organic matter far more completely than the anaerobic bacteria in a standard tank. Some systems add a disinfection stage — chlorine or UV — before the water ever reaches the drain field.

The EPA’s technology fact sheet on aerobic treatment units puts it plainly: aerobic treatment achieves a meaningfully higher level of organic and pathogen reduction than a passive septic tank, which is exactly why it’s allowed on sites a conventional system can’t touch. That water quality comes at a cost, though — the aerator needs continuous power, and the mechanical parts need real maintenance, not the occasional pump-out a conventional system gets by on.

Where mound systems fit in

Mound systems get lumped in with aerobic systems in casual conversation, but they’re solving a different problem. An aerobic system is a treatment technology — it changes how the wastewater gets cleaned. A mound system is a site adaptation — a raised, sand-filled bed that lifts the drain field above a shallow soil layer or a high water table, without necessarily changing how the wastewater is treated beforehand.

In practice, the two sometimes show up together on a difficult lot, and sometimes a mound is paired with a conventional tank instead. If your property has high groundwater but otherwise decent soil, a mound alone might be the fix — no aerator required.

What Texas actually requires

Neither system is a homeowner’s free choice. Every OSSF in Texas starts with a site evaluation, required under 30 TAC §285.30, that checks soil texture, restrictive soil layers, groundwater depth, and slope. Those results get run against the state’s design tables to determine what your specific lot qualifies for — not what you’d prefer. Small lots, poor-draining soil, and high groundwater are the most common reasons a property gets ruled out of a conventional system and pushed toward aerobic treatment, a mound, or both.

Cost and maintenance

Conventional systems typically run $6,000 to $20,000 installed. Aerobic systems run $10,000 to $25,000 or more, since the aerator, electrical service, and sometimes a disinfection unit all add cost that a gravity system doesn’t carry. Mound systems land around $12,000 to $20,000 on their own.

Which one you actually get

For most homeowners, this isn’t a preference decision — it’s a site evaluation result. If your lot qualifies for a conventional system, it’s almost always the cheaper choice over its full lifespan, not just at installation, since it skips both the aerator’s power draw and the annual service contract. Aerobic earns its cost specifically where the soil or lot size rules conventional out.

Most people wait too long to pump because nothing looks wrong yet — and that habit is more forgiving on a conventional system than an aerobic one, where a neglected aerator can fail without any obvious warning sign at the surface. Whichever system you end up with, the tank itself still needs the same attention: concrete or plastic doesn’t change based on which treatment method sits downstream of it.
